The Long Road to Allianz Field.
Morris Duggan is 6’4″, 205 pounds. Minnesota United’s German centre-back is physically imposing β but a kind demeanor gives this large man a very welcoming presence. His story from a village outside Munich to MLS is one of the most unlikely and inspiring paths in the league.

β½ FuΓball macht SpaΓ β Soccer is Fun
It all started at Kirchheimer SC β the local football club just a few blocks from Duggan’s childhood home near Munich. His grandfather was one of the founders of the club. “Everyone plays soccer in Germany,” Duggan said. “My mom used to tell me stories about how I was picking flowers and wasn’t really interested in the beginning. It took me a while to get going, but I was having fun.”
At FC Ismaning’s U19 squad β the second-highest level of U19 competition in Germany β he switched from attacking midfielder to centre-back. Relegation followed, and he returned to Kirchheimer SC’s first team. An average player at an average village club. Not the typical path to MLS.

The Instagram Message That Changed Everything
“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I started studying in Germany, but it didn’t really work out for me. I was at a point in my life where I felt like I had no purpose, and then this agency on Instagram texted me. They asked if I was interested in studying and playing in the US. I was surprised they contacted me because I was just an average player.”
“I reflected on my life, and I wasn’t happy with where I was, and I just decided to do it. It gave me a purpose in life. It flipped a switch inside me.”

Estherville, Iowa β Where Champions Are Made in the Cold
NCAA eligibility issues at Francis Marion University in South Carolina led Duggan to Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa. It sounds like a detour. It turned out to be the making of a professional footballer.
“Being in Iowa helped me a lot; I trained every day and took care of my body. There were no distractions at all. We had this little indoor facility, and when it was cold, I just went there and trained the whole day, went to the gym, and studied the game a lot. I missed my family and friends β it wasn’t easy. But I developed that personality, and it’s helped me become a better player.”

Division One β Two NCAA Tournament Appearances
His Iowa performances earned Division One attention almost immediately. Marshall University offered him a spot, and Duggan spent the next two seasons as a fixture in the Thundering Herds’ backline β leading them to consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and playing his way into MLS SuperDraft consideration. The Loons selected him with the 67th overall pick in 2024.

Allianz Field β Living the Dream
After a loan spell to USL Championship’s Rhode Island FC that toughened him up further, Duggan returned to Minnesota United and earned his first MLS starts. “It was all worth it; I’m a professional soccer player. If you had told me that a few years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. I’m living my dream.”
